With the SPARTAN armor permutations, there is a wide variety that you can choose from: 11 helmets, 8 shoulder pieces and 8 chest pieces. If you total all of this together, there are 5,632 different combinations that you can choose from: One helmet, two shoulder pieces, and chest piece per permutation. This isn’t including color variations.
Same thing goes with the Elite armor permutations. With these options you have 5 helmets, 5 shoulder pieces and 5 chest pieces and these ones total 625 different options that you can choose from: One helmet, two shoulder pieces, and a chest piece. There is a large different between the Elite and SPARTAN armor permutations, the reason being is that the majority of online players play more with SPARTAN and play less as Elites.
Each set of Halo 3 armor looks different and in some cases each different set of armor is better for ground attacks compared to close combat. For example:
The SPARTAN Hayabusa Helmet – Has an upward trio of spikes on the top and either side, face plate is similar to the Elites. To unlock this helmet you have to claim 13 hidden skulls.
Hayabusa Shoulders – Has three metal plates that are arranged in an overlapping manner. To unlock these shoulders you have to claim 9 skulls.
Hayabusa Chest – Has a thick round collar that helps to protect the neck, and to be able to unlock this chest piece you have to claim 5 hidden skulls.
Examples of the Elite Commando armor:
The Commando Helmet – Has a smooth appearance, jaw guard and slam blue lights on forehead, chin and under each eye. To be able to unlock this helmet you have to unlock the ‘Overkill’ achievement.
The Commando Shoulder – Considered similar to the combat harness but are actually smaller and curve outward. To unlock these shoulders you must unlock the ‘killing frenzy’ achievement.
The Commando Chest – Again, similar to the combat chest piece, however there is a small device in the center of the piece and to be able to unlock this chest piece you must unlock the ‘Triple Kill’ achievement.
All of these Halo 3 armor permutations are available once you’ve unlocked different accomplishments in either the actual campaign of the game or in the multiplayer mode of Halo 3, but now with these options you’re able to customize your character from head to toe to better customize yourself into the game.
