Since Master Chief in Halo is known as a “silent warrior”, it’s Cortana that you learn a lot of the back story and tactical information from. Halo’s Cortana was voted as one of the fifty greatest video game characters ever and more disturbingly, rated as one of the ten most sexual game characters. She is, however, also known for believability and character depth.
The Makers of Halo first introduced Cortana through the Cortana files. These files were cryptic e-mails sent out during Combat Evolved’s production in 1999 and they were used to not only introduce Cortana but Halo as well, Cortana has also spoken a lot of these lines in the Halo 3 announcement trailer.
She’s appeared in the Halo series as well as the novels Halo: The Flood, Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: First Strike and Halo: Ghosts of Onyx. According to the novels, Cortana is classified as being “smart”, which allows her to learn and adapt but at the cost of a limited lifespan of only seven years, so eventually, she will probably think herself to death.
The character of Cortana is known for her witty personality, good sense of humor that’s laced with gentle sarcasm, but speaks in a smooth voice. Halo Cortana appears holographically as a woman, and is described as being slender, with close-cropped hair and a skin hue that varies depending on her mood.
Although in her first appearance in the first Halo game, is close to this description, her appearance did change in Halo 2 and Halo 3. Her tone becomes bluer, her hair longer, they gave her a more realistic and feminine figure to make her more human and symbols flash across her as she thinks. The original design of Cortana was actually based on the Egyptian Queen Nefertiti. Aside from Master Chief, Cortana is considered one of the most important characters in the trilogy and serves as Master Chief’s partner in missions.
The designers of Halo constructed Cortana to be creative and highly skilled, she’s known for hacking alien computers and decoding transmissions and due to her witty personality she is often smug about her abilities. Gamers around the world love Halo Cortana, she’s been ninth on the list of Top Ten Xbox Babes and was also named Gamedaily’s Babe of the Week. All of this aside, Halo just wouldn’t be the same with out our witty sidekick.
